Hypertension and High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is caused by tightening of a very small arteries called ‘arterioles’ that regulate blood-flow in the body. The heart is an amazing muscular organ; it works hard to pump the blood through a network of arteries, veins and capillaries.

Moving blood pushes against the walls of the arteries and this force is measured as blood pressure. When blood pressure is high, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through smaller space, and the pressure inside the blood vessels increases.

Blood pressure tends to increase with :

  1. Being Overweight
  2. High levels of stress.
  3. Physical inactivity.
  4. Ageing.
  5. A poor diet.

Usually no symptoms but it can affect health in these ways:

  1. Kidney damage – prolonged hypertension can damage the kidneys if the arteries that irrigate become affected.
  2. Enlarged heart -the pressure forces the heart to work harder. The heart becomes enlarged and is less able to maintain an adequate blood flow. When this happens, you feel weak and tired and cannot exercise or do physical activities. The heart has begun to fail at the effort, which can lead to heart failure.
  3. Hardening of the arteries: the pressure inside the arteries can thicken muscles lining the walls of the arteries, which narrows the arteries. If a blood clot blocks blood flow to the heart or brain, it can cause a heart attack or stroke.
